Methodology

The researcher used images of Mugabe presented in BBC News obtained through purposive sampling mainly informed by Google Trends. Google Trends was used to determine both the articles available for selection and their relevance, through a three-stage process. The first stage entailed the search of online BBC News articles that spoke directly to the coup in Zimbabwe on the Google search engine. The researcher carried out two internet searches in May 2018 in which the key words ‘Zimbabwe military intervention’ and ‘Zimbabwe coup’ were used. A third key word, ‘BBC News’, was then added in order to narrow the search results and, in the process, eliminate results from the Zimbabwean local media and other international media. From this process, the most relevant articles, referred to as ‘top articles’, were noted. The researcher then proceeded to the second stage whereby the top BBC News articles obtained from the two Google searches were then narrowed down by selecting only those articles in which the images of Robert Mugabe appeared. From these articles, a total of 30 images were potentially available for analysis. These images were categorised according to the canons they advanced in relation to the narrative of Mugabe and the coup. From these, four categories emerged and an image was purposively sampled from each on the basis of its suitability to represent its respective category. The images were then analysed in relation to the headlines and image captions that accompanied them. This was in consideration of the view that written text provided the context in which images were meant to operate.
